Being a vegetarian, French food isn't my first choice. However, the soups have a vegetarian stock and there were other choices too. The meal wasn't just a meal, it was an experience. Staff were friendly and amazingly helpful and attentive, the restaurant was packed and the wine was superb. Two happy customers.
The terrine was amazing. And the duck was tender and divine tasting.

Wonderful classic French bistro cooking served in a series of quaint and atmospheric rooms, dressed well to offer a feeling of authentic Gallic experience... albeit in East Barnet.With an emphasis on fresh ingredients and a strong presence of fish, Chez Tonton is well placed to respond to market availability and even the weather... so that we enjoyed cold pea soup, and fresh melon cocktails that were decidedly welcome on one of the hottest days of the year. The wine list is small but superb, and really well priced so that most will feel cheered. Our St Emilion was gorgeous at well under 30. The service is first class from a 'patron' who is an excellent host, supported by two young French waiters, friendly, eagle-eyed and hard-working... looking after busy rooms with charm and efficiency. My quibble, and the only really old-fashioned element in the package, is that the bill makes it clear that service is not included - but doesn't mention that tips don't go to the staff apparently. This is just wrong, and leaves something of a bad taste. I won't fall into that trap again. But this is a gem of an eatery, slightly hidden in North London, but well deserving of wider interest. Go... you won't regret it.
